Merrimack Valley Credit Union Celebrates Winners of the James A. Burley Jr. Scholarship
On Tuesday, August 1, Merrimack Valley Credit Union (MVCU) awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships to three local high school and college students. The students were honored with a special ceremony at the credit union’s Waltham office, followed by a lunch with the students, their families and members of MVCU’s senior management team.
The James A. Burley Jr. Scholarship was founded in 2007 by the former RTN Federal Credit Union. Burley Jr. was a passionate member of the credit union community who served on RTN’s board of directors for 39 years and held the position of board chair for 33 years.
To be eligible for the award, students had to be a former RTN member or their dependent as of April 1, 2023. All full-time students were eligible to apply for this scholarship, regardless of their year in school. To complete their application, students responded to the essay question: What’s the best advice you’ve ever received and how did you apply it to your life?
The award was given to three students, with the first-place winner receiving a $5,000 scholarship, second-place winner receiving a $3,000 scholarship and the third-place winner receiving a $2,000 scholarship. This year’s winners are:
